Le Siècle des vacances

De la villégiature au tourisme de masse

The exhibition Le Siècle des vacances (The Century of Holidays) retraces the evolution of the vacation phenomenon, from vacationing to the democratization of vacations, right up to the era of mass tourism. The images on display illustrate the evolution of society and its customs, combining documentary concern and nostalgia, with photographs by Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Klein, Janine Niepce and Martin Parr...

Each social transformation is accompanied by a specific language and aesthetic codes; each era has its authors, its historians, and today, its photographers. By offering glimpses into the intimate history of the 20th century, the exhibition also tells the story of the history and evolution of photography.

An exhibition presented on the occasion of Fnac's 70th anniversary, based on their collection. Comprising some two thousand works from the 1980s onwards, it is one of France's most important private collections of 20th-century art.

Curator: Laura Serani, artistic director of the Festival Planches Contact
