Vernissage

A look back at the opening of the "Mondes flottants, du Japonisme à l'art contemporain" exhibition

François Louchet

On Sunday, Les Franciscaines was once again the meeting point of cultures at the opening of its new summer exhibition. The "Floating Worlds" exhibition, conceived as part of the Normandie Impressionniste festival, creates a bridge between ancient Japanese art, Impressionism and contemporary Japanese art. This international collaboration between Les Franciscaines and the Mori Art Museum has brought together prints, paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos.

This exhibition embodies one of the founding principles of the Franciscan project: dialogue between the arts and collections. By bringing together works of art from the past and present, exceptional pieces from Japan's past and contemporary Japanese creations, the exhibition offers an unprecedented exchange and dialogue. Woodcuts by Hokusai and Hiroshige, the undisputed masters of Japanese printmaking, meet paintings and drawings by Eugène Boudin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Félix Vallotton, Albert Marquet and Paul Signac, while facing contemporary photographs by Marie Katayama, Yasumasa Morimura, Lee Ufan and Yoichi Umetsu.

This gathering of exceptional pieces was made possible thanks to the support of BnF and loans from the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée Rodin, the Musée Guimet and the Musée Maurice Denis, as well as the Galerie de la Présidence, the Galerie Taménaga and the Galerie Mingei. All lenders were warmly thanked by Philippe Augier, who concluded his speech with two Japanese proverbs to ponder:

I no naka no kawazu taikai o shirazu (The frog in the well knows not the ocean) and Chishiki wa chikara nari (Knowledge is power).
