Saint-Augustin church

by Yves Aublet

The year 2025 marks the 160th anniversary of Deauville's Saint-Augustin church. To mark the occasion, Yves Aublet, author of several books on Deauville, recounts the history and architecture of this remarkable building.

Consecrated on August 3, 1865 by the Bishop of Bayeux in the presence of the Duchesse de Morny, who was in great mourning, the new church took over from the parish of Saint-Laurent sur le Coteau. It was considered too far away, too dilapidated and, above all, far too small for the growing number of parishioners. It was named after the Duke's middle name, which he had lost earlier in the year. He laid the foundation stone on August 30, 1864. Its architecture is eclectic, a style characteristic of the Second Empire period, blending Paleo-Christian, Romanesque and Gothic elements.

A monument of considerable and sometimes unsuspected architectural richness, which our historian from Deauville invites you to discover in great detail.
