Valérie Belin

The things between them

Les Franciscaines presents Les choses entre elles, a monographic exhibition of the work of Valérie Belin. Some sixty photographs chosen from among the most emblematic series of her work, including five from her latest Cover Girls series, are presented publicly for the first time.

Portraits of live models or dummy models, mirrors, objects photographed as bodies, bodies photographed as objects and, more recently, still lifes, vanitas and fictional characters make up an iconographic repertoire in which the staging of "things" seems to be the real issue in Valérie Belin's photographs.

Without following a strictly chronological thread, the exhibition shows the evolution of the artist's work, which, exploring the limits of photography in its relationship with reality, draws us into the making of images - and which, moving from black & white to color and from silver to digital, appropriates the technological mutations of photography as if in search of a new ontology.

While the first part of the exhibition traces the artist's early career, it highlights his photographs of objects - Venetian mirrors, wrecked cars, dresses - bodies (especially bodybuilders) and portraits, which might more accurately be described as "photographs of faces".

As for the works on display on the second level, they reflect a more recent period in the artist's work. Here, Valérie Belin develops a singular iconography, in which still lifes, vanitas and female portraits take the form of contemporary allegories, blending artifice and symbolism to reflect on the image itself.

Valérie Belin unveils here her entire universe, rich and meticulous, meticulous and meticulous, rich and meticulous, rich and meticulous, rich and meticulous, rich and meticulous.
